The Student Civic Leadership Awards recognize outstanding student leaders at Washington Campus Coalition member campuses for their work in civic engagement and social entrepreneurship. Nominations for the 2024 awards are now closed.
Winners will be advanced for consideration for the Governor’s Student Civic Leadership Award. Learn more about the Governor's Award at Washington Campus Coalition's page.
Individuals nominated will also be considered for the 2024 UW Tacoma Gift of Service Award.
2023-24 Recipients
Student Civic Leader: Jannat Musawi - BA Psychology & Social Welfare '26, Minor in Global Engagement
Musawi was selected by Chancellor Lange to receive this award for her dedication to civic leadership. Her engaging leadership style motivates and inspires fellow students to actively participate in civic activities.
Student Civic Leader: Holly Wetzel - BA Psychology & Healthcare '25
Wetzel was selected by the Chancellor for this year’s Student Civic Leadership Award for her unwavering commitment to community and campus well-being. With a concentration on psychology and healthcare leadership, Holly’s work exemplifies her dedication to advocacy and supporting student’s health and well-being.
2022-23 Recipients
Student Civic Leader: Perla Vazquez - BA in Law & Policy '24, Minor in Latino Studies
Vazquez was selected by the Chancellor for this year’s Student Civic Leadership Award for her leadership and dedication to community engagement with a focus on advocating for undocumented students and beyond.
Student Civic Leader: Gabriela Romero - BA in Global Studies '23, Minor: Global Engagement, Business, Human Rights
Romero was selected by Chancellor Lange to receive this award for her outstanding contributions in civic engagement. With a concentration on global studies and human rights, Gabriela's work exemplifies her dedication to civic leadership and making a difference in her community.
2021-22 Recpients
Student Civic Leader: Andre Henderson - BA in Social Welfare '22, Minor in Global Engagement;
Henderson was selected by Chancellor Lange for this year's Student Civic Leadership Award for his extensive background in civic service and leadership with a focus on social justice, community engagement, advocating for formerly incarcerated individuals and breaking to School-to-Prison Pipeline. His continued hard work has not gone unnoticed, as he was also the recipient of this years’ Washington State Governor’s Award - learn more about his work here!
Student Civic Leader: Andre Jimenez - BA in Law & Policy '22, Minor in Global Engagement;
Chancellor Lange selected Andre Jimenez for this for award as a result of his outstanding contributions in civic engagement. With a concentration on human rights and social justice, Jimenez's work exemplifies his dedication to civic leadership and making a difference in his community.
Previous Recipients
Four student fellows spent this academic year working alongside Dr. Christine Stevens ands Dr. Chis Beasley to research Food Insecurity and the Prison-to-College Pipeline.
Dr. Christine's fellows worked to explore developing leadership skills in addressing the sociocultural systems of food insecurity at UWT and Pierce County and developing innovative strategies to address food justice issues facing our campus and community.
Dr. Chris Beasley's fellow gathered formerly incarcerated students from across the state of Washington for a one-day online summit. At the summit, the students identified common values and goals as well as next steps for continuing organizing efforts. Michelle helped pioneer this work that has continued since the summit ended.

Emerging Student Civic Leader: Mikel Priddy - BA Environmental Sustainability '20;
Recognized as a civic leader in the making who is beginning to take initiative on campus and/or community organizations while striving for positive change, Priddy was selected by Chancellor Pagano to receive this award for her exemplary work in Housing and Food Insecurity.
Outstanding Student Civic Leader: Augustine Canales - BA Social Welfare '19; MSW '21
This designation is for a more experienced student who has effectively and meaningfully collaborated with their campus for positive change. As someone deeply committed to his engagement projects while continuously showing the motivation and promise of someone aspiring to long-term civic engagement in his community, Canales was selected by Chancellor Pagano to receive this award for his exemplary work in Breaking the School-to-Prison Pipeline
These awards were established by Washington Campus Compact in order to recognize and support students in higher education who are dedicated to addressing critical needs across the state.
