The Office of Community Partnerships (OCP) is seeking a Data Analyst Intern to support a community-led project addressing digital accessibility and internet trends in the South Puget Sound. This intern will support the OCP’s Center for Applied Urban Research (CAUR) and perform analysis of survey results and US Census Data under the guidance of data analysis experts. This role requires independent work for cleaning and analyzing datasets, with guidance from CAUR staff of different assessment techniques. It would be ideal for a student or recent graduate who wants to broaden their analytical experience with a real-world research project. The duration of this internship is approximately 5 months (September-2021 through January 2022) and includes a training stipend in the amount of $5,000.

Position Responsibilities:
- Working alongside CAUR team members, administer, monitor, and aggregate results of a community survey
- Under the guidance of CAUR staff, perform analysis of survey results
- Aggregate survey results with other data sources (ACS data, US Census data, and others) to produce robust results
- Work with community partners to develop publication-quality data visualizations for wide distribution
- Assist with report writing, PowerPoint slide development, or other results distribution as directed by community partners
- Other data-oriented tasks as required
Minimum Skills and Experience Required:
- Current or recent UW Tacoma student (graduate or undergraduate level);
- Experience performing standard analysis of survey results;
- Experience seeking and using US Census data, specifically American Community Survey data (ACS) through the census.data.gov portal;
- Experience performing analysis through different analytical tools. (ex: SPSS, Pandas or other Python-based libraries, RStudio, or others);
- Experience presenting findings visually through charts and graphs using a preferred library (Matplotlib, SPSS graphs, Excel, or others);
- Comfortable working with internal and external partners to successfully answer research questions;
- Some experience writing professional reports for a wide audience is an asset.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Knowledge of applied statistics and applications to urban research;
- Deep understanding of ACS data and how to navigate census.gov platform to find relevant datasets;
- Background in data analytics, spatial analytics, or other analysis strongly preferred;
- Experience working with multiple stakeholders to understand their requirements and integrate into a final product;
Examples of projects you may have done in that past:
- Undergrad or graduate-level coursework dealing with census data and analysis of population demographics, income/housing/jobs data, or other census-based analysis;
- Evaluation of population characteristics on a spatial dataset;
- Experience working with spatial datasets is an asset;
- Conducting community surveys with distribution to different community groups with hundreds or thousands of responses and evaluating the results;
- Performing data analysis of a large dataset and providing graphs, charts, and other visualizations to help guide users to interpret results.
