Program Overview
Learn to manage people, to build effective programs, and to maintain a healthy and efficient nonprofit organization. Develop the knowledge, insights and abilities to enter or advance your career in the nonprofit field.
Curriculum focuses on nonprofit leadership, financial management and the broader operational aspects of nonprofits. Structured as a rigorous series of short courses taught by nonprofit practitioners, courses last from two to six weeks each. Evening classes are generally held once per week at the UW Tacoma campus. Total class time for the program is 90 hours.
Who would benefit from this program?
Courses are designed for those with some experience working or volunteering in a nonprofit organization; however, nonprofit experience is not required to enroll. You will gain knowledge and skills that will enable you to pursue or advance a career in the nonprofit sector in these areas:

Two years of college or one year of work experience in the nonprofit sector recommended.
Open Enrollment
Unique to UW Tacoma is the ability to start a certificate with any course in the program - whether it starts Fall Term, Winter Term or Spring Term. You have two years from the start of your first course to complete the certificate program. Upon successful completion of all program requirements, participants earn a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the University of Washington Tacoma and 90 hours or 9 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Participants must meet the minimum standard of 80% for attendance and completion of coursework.
Most courses in the Nonprofit Management program are approved for Continuing Education Points through CFRE International under Category Publication 1.B Education.

The Nonprofit Leadership course is a seamless study of the key leadership competencies and challenges faced in this professional sector divided between three core themes and learning outcomes.
Theme One: Leadership Paradigms and Capacities
- Understand current leadership frameworks, compare and contrast their impacts.
- Recognize key capacities related to various leadership approaches and consider their implications in practice.
- Reflect on and articulate your personal leadership philosophy and evaluate its strengths and limitations.
- Identify goals to further develop your capabilities to lead in alignment with your core values.
Theme Two: Governance as Leadership
- Understand generally accepted roles and responsibilities of nonprofit boards.
- Recognize emerging concepts of governance and reflect on how these philosophies align with and compare to traditional governance approaches.
- Reflect on how recruiting, orienting and retaining board members might be impacted by these re-visioned approaches to governance.
- Integrate the learnings from themes one and two.
Theme Three: Strategic Engagement and Adaptation
- Grasp the role of strategy in leadership.
- Recognize essential elements to engage strategically and ways these elements are adapting and evolving.
- Articulate a variety of skills and tools that may be used for developing strategic planning/scenario planning processes within your nonprofit organization.
- Integrate the learnings from each of the three themes considered in this course.
The performance measurement program area will introduce nonprofit professionals to current concepts in measurement systems and methods designed to improve the performance of a nonprofit organization.
Ethical dilemmas are inherent in managing a nonprofit organization. Explore how personal values and the authority of one’s position impacts ethical decision making. Gain insight into current ethics issues and the systemic challenges of managing ethically in any organization.
- Discuss common ethical dilemmas within nonprofit organizations.
- Identify how personal values and position authority impacts ethical decision making.
- Demonstrate the ability to cultivate a culture of accountability and transparency.
- Discuss conflict of interest policies and procedures for staff, volunteers and board members
Learn the unique practical and lawful approaches to develop human resource policies for Nonprofit organizations.
Learn strategies to efficiently manage the financial resources of a nonprofit organization.
This course offers an overview of the history of philanthropy, its changing environment, and the current state of fund development. New perspectives and approaches to fund development will be explored in light of current events. We will examine the various sources of funding, ways to determine which sources best align with organizational mission, and ways to meaningfully connect with specific donors. Students will distinguish and weigh the elements required to develop a balanced fund development plan. The value of storytelling in the fund development process will be probed and a connection drawn between compelling storytelling and developing organizational impact statements. We will examine racism in philanthropy and fund development and validate the imperative to practice diversity, equity, and inclusion in this field.
