As the winter quarter continues, students at the University of Washington Tacoma (UWT) campus have been facing a limited selection of food options on and near campus. With many businesses on Pacific Ave closing, and the recent surge in prices at West Coast Grocery, students have been left with few nutritional and affordable options for meals. However, there is some exciting news on the horizon: Food trucks are coming to campus!
February 15th 2023 Update:
ASUWT President Jai'Shon Berry announced during the ASUWT Fireside Chat that Food Trucks will be coming to the UWT campus as a pilot program. Jai'Shon remarked, "Hopefully with enough student enjoyment this can become a fully funded campus program."
The food trucks are slated to arrive on campus during the second or third week of the quarter, with the goal of having three different food trucks on campus for three days a week. This will provide students with a wider range of food options at affordable prices and promote food diversity on campus.
Food diversity and affordability are key considerations when deciding what food trucks will come to campus. A student committee has been meeting to discuss which specific food trucks will come to campus and which ones are the most affordable for students. Jai'Shon and the committee are also taking into consideration not picking food trucks that compete with the already struggling businesses on Pacific Ave.
April 21st 2023 Update:
President Berry remarks in a public Executive Board Meeting that the pilot program has been pushed back to the end of the month due to funding issues.
April 28th 2023 Update:
