This message was sent to confirmed students at UW Tacoma. Contact the Office of the Registrar for details.
There are two primary ways students may qualify for a change in residency classification.
-
The Residency Affidavit: Review the criteria below. The affidavit is for newly admitted students in their first quarter. If you meet both requirements, complete and sign the affidavit for consideration. This is regardless of citizenship or immigration status in most cases.
- Received a high school diploma (or equivalent).
- Maintain a primary residence in Washington for at least 12 consecutive months immediately before your first term. The Washington residence must be for purposes other than college. If you take any courses at another Washington college during the prior 12 months, you cannot have taken more than six credits in any given term. If you exceed that limit you must prove that you have a Washington residence for non-college reasons.
- The Residency Questionnaire: If you do not meet the above, you may qualify and apply for a change once you have resided in Washington a period of 12 months and meet these additional criteria. Consider checking with our office once you have been here 12 months.
For additional options and information, visit Understanding Washington Residency.
The deadline to submit for a change in resident classification for Autumn is October 24th, 2024.
If you are a new student and believe that your residency status is an error – you have been a long-time resident of Washington and this message is coming as quite a surprise – feel free to reply to me with some of your details (including your student ID number) and we can make a plan going forward. Just not answering one question on your application to the University or misinterpreting it might mean that you might be categorized as a non-resident until information is clarified or updated.
Veteran/Military Affiliated Students
If you are a veteran or military –affiliated student, please first check if you meet the Residency Affidavit criteria. You may hear separately from our Veteran and Military Resource Center about your residency options. More information about ways to qualify for residency based on a military or veteran exception is at https://www.tacoma.uw.edu/vmrc/residency-military-connected-students
We look forward to serving you while enrolled as a student on our campus for Autumn 2024.
