We offer a 12-month full-time Doctoral Internship in Health Service Psychology. The interns at CAPS receive intensive, supportive training in the nine APA profession-wide competencies. Interns provide individual and group psychotherapy, crisis and initial assessment, outreach, consultation, and supervision of doctoral practicum (“preinternship”) trainees. The program is designed to allow interns to develop a balanced general foundation of clinical knowledge and experience.
Each year, two doctoral interns are selected from graduate programs in counseling and clinical psychology through the National Matching Service. We have 2 full-time (40 hours per week) internship positions available September 1 through August 31 each year. The salary is $35,568 plus full staff benefits in accordance with University of Washington policy. Please note the recent change in the overtime exempt status of the internship position: Due to the Fair Labor Standards Act and Washington Minimum Wage Act, as of January 1, 2021, the state of WA considers the intern salary level ($35,568) to be nonexempt from overtime, which changes the status of this position (from exempt to nonexempt) for the first time. We have made the necessary changes in the intern schedule so that interns will not accrue any overtime. Please access Example of Intern Weekly Activities for the most current description of interns’ weekly responsibilities.
A note about applications: Please include all essays, a cover letter specific to our site, CV, and transcripts with your AAPI. Please DO NOT include any assessment reports, writing samples, or other supplemental materials. We require 3 letters of recommendation, with strong preference for 2 letters from individuals who have supervised your clinical work. Thank you.
As an APPIC member training site, we adhere to APPIC regulations regarding selection and notification of internship applicants. Please access the full 2021-2022 Internship Program Description to learn more about our internship program and learn about the benefits available to interns.
CAPS has been a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) since 2009 and is a member of the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies (ACCTA). While CAPS is not APA accredited, trainees from APA-accredited doctoral programs have matched with us, and we follow the APA Profession-Wide Competencies. Further, our training program was accepted in July 2020 to the Accreditation Readiness Project sponsored by APPIC. This means that we have started the self-study (the first step in the process of applying to APA for accreditation), which is scheduled to be submitted to APA in summer 2021. After submission, it typically takes another 18 months to become accredited.
