Please continue to monitor UW Alerts (text messages to your mobile device) and UW Tacoma's Emergency Response Updates. The campus page also contains resources on instructional continuity, community resources available to students (e.g., food services and IT support), and other resource options for faculty and staff.
This page is meant for the UW Tacoma School of Education community and is primarily geared toward faculty, including field supervisors and part-time faculty, although it is relevant to everyone. While we will continue sending out relevant follow-up information but will not replicate information/resources already communicated through central channels.
Key Parts of Dean's Message on July 10, 2024
Please cc your faculty program director when you contact the Dean or Office of the Dean staff with questions about your class/es- it's vital that program leadership is in the loop and they may be able to better assist you.
FAQ s - maintained by date:
Q1: Can we find a space off-campus to have my scheduled in-person class? My class has hands-on activities
A1: As much as possible, UWT asks that instructors migrate classes remotely during the officially scheduled class time. The second-best option is to approximate class sessions through asynchronous activities.
I have a request out to campus leadership see if UWT would allow individual faculty and/or the Office of Field Placements & Partnerships could reach out to off-site partners (community and PK-12) to inquire about space usage off-campus and will keep everyone posted.
However, there may be inter-institutional liability issues that may not make this possible, and/or it may take too long to obtain all levels of permission to do this timely. Moreover, keep in mind that some sites charge outsiders a rental fee, which the unit's likely unable to cover, except in extraordinary circumstances requiring prior approval by Director of Operations, Maria Hamilton.
Q2: When the heat simmers down and if I feel my course is conducive to meeting outside (e.g., on the campus lawn) next week, may students and I meet outside on campus for my x course?
A2: No. Please have students (and others) stay away from campus until we receive final and official word that everything's safely reopen. There are major safety and workload issues for our UWT Campus Safety & Facilities colleagues that would make this disruptive, even if outdoors.
Q3: I don't know how to set up Zoom...
A3: Please refer to UW's Zoom Video Conferencing page for account set-up and contact information for help. Contact your faculty program director for further guidance.
Note: The Dean and School of Education staff are unable to set up individual Zoom sessions for each class and also are unable to access/set up any employee's UW accounts due to data/privacy policies.
Q4: What should I do if I'm seeing a decline in student work quality due to impacts of recent events that are outside of their control? e.g., some of my students usually come to campus to use the computer lab/access Wi-Fi. They're now doing all of their assignments on their phones; it's impacting the quality of their work.
A4: See EVCAA's guidance- it's best to be as flexible and understanding as possible with students in this UW-declared emergency. To explore options such as Incompletes or other grading options, please contact your faculty program director for guidance. Note: the campus update page also contains information about how students may access campus and community resources.
