If your math placement test scores place you in any of the following courses:
- Elementary Algebra (Math 90)
- Introduction to Elementary Algebra (Math 85)
- Review Arithmetic (Math 75)
You will need to complete these courses at Tacoma Community College or another local community college if you intend to enroll in a college-level math course at UW Tacoma. UW Tacoma does not offer any math courses lower than Intermediate Algebra (TMATH 098). Please see your advisor for more information and dual enrollment options.
TMATH 098 (Intermediate Algebra) is an algebra review course equivalent to the second year of high school algebra. It is offered by Tacoma Community College (TCC) but located on the University of Washington, Tacoma campus for the convenience of UWT students (called Math 95 at TCC). No college credit is given for this course. It is offered for students who have not met the minimum prerequisite for college level math courses or for courses requiring prerequisites in mathematics. In Washington state overall, almost half the entering freshman place into Intermediate Algebra.
Registration
The number of TMATH 098 sections are limited. Students will be enrolled at UW Tacoma and TCC campuses and entry codes are required for registration. To request entry into the course or questions, send an email using your UW email address including your name and student ID number to oue@uw.edu. Please note that approved entry into the course requires a satisfacory placement test score or proof of college credit in an acceptable prerequisite. For credit/schedule questions contact your Academic Advisor or book an appointment.
A minimum number of students must enroll or the course will be subject to cancellation.
Financial aid requirements
TMATH 098 meets the enrollment requirements for financial aid. All financial aid funds should disburse as scheduled if you are enrolled in this course. Tuition for this course is separate from your UW tuition and you are responsible for making payment directly to TCC. If you register for TMATH 098 less than two weeks prior to or after the start of the quarter, please inform the UWT Office of Student Financial Aid by sending an email to uwtfa@uw.edu. Please note:
- Because TMATH 098 is not a college-level course it carries no credits and 0 credits are reflected on your schedule and transcripts.
- Although it carries no credits, it is considered a 5 credit hour class and will count towards your enrollment status. Only 7 other credits will need to be taken to be considered full-time.
- Students needing verification of full-time academic status for outside scholarship purposes should request a copy of their enrollment verification from the Registrar's Office.
For questions about Financial Aid contact a Financial Aid Advisor (253-692-4374, uwtfa@uw.edu).

As of Winter quarter 2015, there are two different pathways available to students who wish to fulfill their Calculus (TMATH 124) prerequisites at UWT:
TMATH 115 & TMATH 116 Sequence – A stretched two-part series of courses designed to prepare students for Calculus. This sequence is best suited for students who prefer a slower pace and deeper exposure to the material than what is covered in TMATH 120.
- TMATH 115 introduces the concept of a function, its notation, and prepares student to work with piece-wise, exponential, logarithmic, polynomial, and rational functions. Emphasizes computational skills, graph reading, and problem solving.
- TMATH 116 continues studying the concept of a function, its notation, and trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions. Introduces parametrized curves, polar coordinates, and complex numbers. Emphasizes computational skills, graph reading, and problem solving techniques.
OR
TMATH 120 – A quarter long course designed to provide the essentials for Calculus. TMATH 120 examines polynomial, rational, exponential, and trigonometric functions. This course is best for students who are prepared to master the concepts presented in TMATH 120 at a rapid pace.
See http://www.washington.edu/students/crscatt/tmath.html for additional course description details.
Prerequisites for pre-calculus
In order to register for pre-calculus, either the sequence (TMATH 115 & 116) or accelerated course (TMATH 120), students must meet one of the following criteria:
- A 2.0 or higher in TMATH 98 or approved intermediate algebra course.
- A score of 237 or greater on the Accuplacer Advanced, Algebra & Functions Math test
- An APTP score of 151-165 on the APTP-GS or 145-153 on the APTP-AS
- Or, a score of 5 or 6 on the IB Exam
If you have questions regarding these placement options, please discuss them with your Academic Advisor.
