Global Honors Course Substitution

Complete this form to request a course be used as a substitute for TGH 301, 302, 303, or 490 in the Global Honors program. Substitutions will also apply to Global Engagement minors and certificates. All courses should be submitted via the form below and a copy of the course syllabus (along with any supplementary material) should be included with your submission.

The National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC), which supports, enhances, and develops best practices for the collegiate honors community = indicates that "most Honors courses will have the following five objectives, or some variation" ^[1]:

• To help students develop effective written communication skills (including the ability to make effective use of the information and ideas they learn);
• To help students develop effective oral communication skills (while recognizing that not all students are comfortable with talking a lot in class);
• To help students develop their ability to analyze and synthesize a broad range of material;
• To help students understand how scholars think about problems, formulate hypotheses, research those problems, and draw conclusions about them; and to help students understand how create artists approach the creative process and produce an original work;
• To help students become more independent and critical thinkers, demonstrating the ability to use knowledge and logic when discussing an issue or an idea, while considering consequences of their ideas, for themselves, for others, and for society.

As it is the mission of UW Tacoma to "foster scholarship, research and creativity to address the challenging problems of our time and place," Global Honors courses have the following features:

Criteria for the Global Honors Course Approval

To be considered for Global Honors substitution, courses must:

• Be taught at the 300 or 400 level.
• Address this UWT Global Honors Learning Outcome
  • Demonstrate enhances skills in research, critical thinking, writing, working cooperatively, and oral communication
• Address at least TWO additional UWT Global Honors Learning Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate ability to produce collaborative solutions for global challenges
  • Demonstrate understanding of global interdependencies in economic, political, social, and cultural systems
  • Demonstrate understanding of processes of globalization
  • Demonstrate proficiency in researching, synthesizing, and presenting global topics
  • Demonstrate understanding and appreciation of interdisciplinary perspectives

• Include specific assessment mechanisms to measure the degree to which students are meeting the chose UW Tacoma Global Honors Learning Outcomes.

If the student learning objectives of the proposed course do not reflect the required UWT Global Honors Learning Outcomes, a course change proposal must be submitted and approved before this application is submitted. Courses must meet these requirements each time they are taught. Courses that are taught differently at different times, such as Special Topics courses, Independent Studies or Internships, will not be approved as course substitutes.
