Law schools do not expect applicants to have had any previous legal employment, nor do they generally give any preference to applicants who have had legal internships. However, legal internships and law-related employment can be very beneficial for students in determining whether law school is the right fit for them and, if so, what areas of law are most interesting to them. Additionally, legal internships and employment can help students gain important skills and professional connections.
There are many resources available for searching opportunities, depending on the type of experience you are looking for. Below are resources for finding select types of opportunities, but remember, a Google search can also be a powerful tool for finding an opportunity that is right for you!
- Take advantage of all of the resources available through the UW Tacoma Career Development Center, including signing up for Handshake!
- For finding non-profit internship and volunteer opportunities, Idealist is a great source that allows you to search by interest and location.
- Make sure to check out local legal service providers for internship opportunities, for example, Tacoma Pro Bono (TPB) and Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP) both offer college internship opportunities;
- For information on congressional internships, make sure to search the representative’s or senator’s website or check out the Washington State Legislative Internship Program
