Graduating students who have borrowed federal student loans (including Federal Direct Stafford Loans, Federal Direct PLUS Loan for Graduate Students, Federal Perkins Loans) for their undergraduate and/or graduate degree are required to complete online loan exit counseling when they graduate (or each time the drop below half-time enrollment or withdraw from school). To complete the online exit counseling session you will need your FSA ID and password used to complete your FAFSA.
To complete the loan exit counseling, go to https://studentaid.gov/ and sign in with your FSA ID. If you do not have an FSA ID, follow the prompts to create one. Click the link for Complete Counseling, then click the link for Exit Counseling. Follow the prompts to complete the loan exit counseling process.
Please note that completing the online exit counseling does not put your loans into repayment. It only provides key information on understanding your loans and responsibilities. Additionally it will provide information about debt management strategies, repayment plans, and forbearance and deferment options. Our office also provides loan information via Zoom (by appointment only) to graduating students who have borrowed federal loans.
If you are a graduating student with federal loans, please email uwtfa@uw.edu to schedule a 15 minute Zoom appointment with one of our staff.
Note: Graduate students who benefited from the TEACH Grant program while at the University of Washington Tacoma will also need to complete TEACH Grant-specific Exit Counseling. For TEACH Grant recipients there is another link for completing the separate TEACH exit counseling process.
