Lessons in Leadership is an interview series sponsored by the Milgard School of Business designed to share leadership insights from successful leaders in local and regional organizations. With a wealth of talented and accomplished business leaders in the South Puget Sound region, the interviews provide an opportunity for students, educators, and organizational professionals to learn from the expertise and experiences of others. In the series, CLSR representatives talk with diverse business leaders across various industries to explore the lessons they have learned that can enrich our understanding of effective leadership and social responsibility.

Lesson in Leadership with Frank Boykin Jr, Manufacturing Industrial Council of the South Sound
Frank Boykin Jr. is passionate about public service. The Manufacturing Industrial Council for the South Sound (MIC), supports local manufacturers by advocating for jobs that support families and industrial areas across the region. The organization was founded in 2018, and Boykin is its second director.
Before landing at MIC, Frank worked for 25 years at the United Parcel Service (UPS) where he started out as a driver helper and worked his way up into management.
Lesson in Leadership with Queena Tupou, Carol Milgard Breast Center
Queena Tupou oversees the Marketing and Outreach at the Carol Milgard Breast Center in Tacoma, WA which includes the FaithHealth in Action Program. She attended Eastern Washington University and has been in healthcare marketing for over 8 years. She was named in South Sound Business Magazine’s 40 under 40 most influential young professionals list for 2020. Queena currently serves as the Secretary on the Board of Directors for Pacific Islander Health Alliance NW and also serves on the Executive Committee for the Leaders in Women’s Health. A proud Senior Fellow of the Tacoma/Pierce County American Leadership Forum with a passion for leadership development, Queena enjoys spending her downtime with her husband Tupua and daughter Amelia.
Lesson in Leadership with Kurt Carlson, CEO of Propel Insurance
Kurt Carlson is President and CEO of Propel Insurance. Kurt joined the sales team at Propel in 1989, and over the years has helped Propel become one of the largest and most successful independently owned insurance companies in the Northwest. As President and CEO, Kurt is responsible for the overall operations and business affairs of the company. Kurt is a graduate of the University of Washington, and has actively supported the Milgard School of Business and other South Puget Sound organizations with philanthropic and volunteer efforts.
