The TLC accepts applications for student employees through Handshake. The writing center usually hires the majority of students to begin working in autumn quarter, though we accept applications year-round. We are always accepting applications for quantitative tutors. If you are ready to learn and grow through working at the Teaching & Learning Center as either a tutor in writing, math, science, computer science, business and accounting or as an office assistant, we'd like to hear from you.

Job Descriptions
Duties and responsibilities
- Thoroughly learn writing center processes, policies, and staff profiles in order to help students schedule appointments and trouble-shoot
- Work in teams with peer writing consultants to manage and accommodate student tutorials, direct student inquiries, and support smooth transitions between appointments and shifts
- Navigate scheduling, re-scheduling, and cancellations with students
- Learn common technology trouble-shooting, such as Zoom, converting pdfs and editing pdfs, attaching and deleting files, etc.
- Provide excellent customer service, including friendly greetings, thorough explanations, and modeling information-seeking behavior
- Manage and add to FAQs and question logs/scenarios
- Manage phone calls and messages, email, and live-chat
- Provide clerical and office support when needed, including picking up mail, copying, etc.
- Room scheduling/calendars (not sure what this will look like in our new space)
- Develop professional competency/experience in an area of interest, including social media, data/assessment, leadership, technical writing, etc.

- Good computer skills including knowledge of Google Suite, MS Office suite

- Collaborate one-on-one or in groups with clients to provide academic and skills support and to help them meet their academic goals in UWT’s quantitative courses
- Attend required meetings and trainings
- Assist with TLC quantitative workshops, orientations, and class visits
- Set and meet quarterly goals with professional staff to help develop and advance the resources of the TLC
- Perform routine tasks including greeting clients, answering phones, helping students, and administrative duties. Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Minimum 3.0 grade for courses in assigned quantitative fields (math, statistics, css and engineering)
- Completion of calculus series - Calc I, Calc II and Calc III
- Completed coursework in specific tutoring content area
- For scheduling purposes, an applicant needs to be available to work during at least 10 hours of the TLC's open hours
- Commitment to work at least 5-6 hours per week
- Effective communication skills
- Strong desire to work in an academic support setting
- Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment
- Commitment to an inclusive and equitable working/learning environment

This position is designed to provide support to graduate students at UW Tacoma in the following disciplines: Nursing, Social Work, Business Analytics. These programs all require Statistics knowledge and some programming knowledge.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide remote support to graduate students to understand concepts behind their work and develop stronger quantitative skills
- Provide statistics application support for programs such as: R, SQL, SPSS, Excel
- Attend training and scheduled meetings
- Assist with workshops, orientations, and classroom visits
Qualifications
- Excellent math, quantitative, and communication abilities; minimum 3.0 in relevant courses
- Must be proficient in R
- Must be proficient in Python or similar programming language
- Must have taken the following statistics courses or equivalent:
- STAT 502 Design and Analysis of Experiments
- STAT 503 Practical Methods for Data Analysis
- STAT 504 Applied Regression
- Ability to clearly explain ideas and concepts in a collaborative manner
Desired Qualifications
- Familiarity with the following in order of importance: SQL, SPSS, Tableau, Qualtrics

Duties and responsibilities
- Work with students to help them understand assignments, clarify ideas, and develop as writers.
- Attend training and scheduled meetings.
- Assist with workshops, orientations, and classroom visits.
- Develop handouts, web content, and other resources for the TLC.
- Perform light reception duties.
Qualifications
- Current UW student available to work at least one full academic year (three quarters)
- Excellent listening, responding, and analytical reading skills
- Knowledge of or interest in different writing styles and genres
- Interest in developing further as a writer
- Ability to explain and demonstrate concepts in multiple ways
- Desire to work with all writers at UWT and to help others learn and understand
- Proficiency with word processing software, especially Microsoft Word
- Commitment to the anti-racist and inclusive mission of our writing center

- How has feedback from others influenced your writing and what kinds of feedback do you give others on their writing?
- How did the video confirm or challenge your assumptions about being a writing tutor?

Compensation
Duties and responsibilities
- Maintain a schedule at the Teaching and Learning Center and drop-in hours at MAT213
- Provide one-on-one or group coaching to help other first gen students and their peers, discuss study habits, set academic goals and develop effective learning strategies
- Attend required trainings throughout every quarter regarding mentoring models, learning tools and techniques
- Create and implement skill building sessions for first generation students that will strengthen their academic success
Qualifications
The Peer Success Mentor must be a UW Tacoma returning student in good standing with the University. The peer mentor must maintain a 3.0 UW cumulative GPA. In addition, an ideal candidate will meet the following qualifications:
- Ability to use critical thinking to troubleshoot and problem-solve
- Well-organized, ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines and provide high-level of accuracy
- Ability to work with diverse individuals and groups
- Willingness to learn and produce quality work
- Excellent time management skills
- Experience with Microsoft word, Office 365, G-suite
