How might we update the blueprint for Black excellence that began in Tacoma in 1969?
This design question derives from the historic Mother's Day Disturbance in Tacoma's Hilltop neighborhood on May 11, 1969. A direct response to police brutality, the Mother's Day Disturbance cultivated a critical shift in the struggle for civil rights and the evolution of Black representation in Tacoma’s politics. Twelve members of Activists Cultivating Equitable Strategies (ACES) from the Institute for Black Justice (IBJ) will address this design challenge in the Global Innovation and Design (GID) Lab on April 28, 2022.
The GID Lab is proud to work with IBJ to facilitate a Design Thinking Workshop as part of their second annual Freedom Summer Symposium. Focusing on the theme of Updating the Blueprint for Black Excellence, the GID Lab team will host a two-hour workshop that will lead ACES members through ideation and prototyping to create a blueprint for Black excellence.
