 2024-25 MONTGOMERY SCHOLARSHIP FOR SOCIAL WORK AND SOCIAL WELFARE STUDENTS

 

In memory of Bishop Curtis Montgomery and his wife Dr. Elinor Montgomery, the School of Social Work and Criminal Justice is pleased to announce the Montgomery Scholarship.  The Montgomery’s wish was to encourage student leadership and excellence and to aid students struggling with the financial undertaking of higher education. Preference will be given to scholarship applicants who are members of Phi Alpha and have the highest financial need. Financial need will be determined by the UW Tacoma Financial Aid Office with data received from the individual's 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). These book-aid scholarships typically range from $250 - $500 and are available to BASW and MSW students.

Application procedures are described below.  Eligible applicants are students continuing their degree progression in spring quarter 2025, when the scholarship funds will be awarded. Successful recipients may be contacted by the Office of Advancement to write a “thank you” to the donor.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Currently enrolled University of Washington Tacoma MSW or BASW student in good standing at the time of the scholarship application, with successful completion of at least one quarter of coursework by the time of scholarship fund disbursement.
  • Preference given to Phi Alpha members and students who have financial need. 

Application Procedure:

To apply for this scholarship, applicants must provide the following information:

  • Completed Montgomery Scholarship Application.

  • An unofficial UW Tacoma transcript (printed from MyUW).

  • Complete a 2024-2025 FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov and list the 
    "University of Washington Seattle, WA" as a school which information should be 
    released to.  The University of Washington Title IV code is 003798.  Please note that while the priority deadline has passed, it is not too late to complete the FAFSA if you have not previously done so. 

  • A personal statement addressing the importance of social work education to your professional goals, any financial barriers faced as a result of pursuing and prioritizing your education, and what receipt of the Montgomery Scholarship would mean to you.  The length of the essay should be 1 page, typed, double spaced and 11 or 12 point font. 

Application Deadline: Monday November 11th, 2024 (by midnight).

By signing this application, I certify that my statements in this application are true, complete and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. I understand that any falsification or omission of information may disqualify me from consideration for this scholarship. I understand that all statements made on this application may be verified. I hereby give permission to release my financial aid data to the School of Social Work and Criminal Justice so that the scholarship award committee may consider my financial need as a dimension of the scholarship criteria. If I receive a scholarship from UW Tacoma, I: 1) give the University permission to publish my name in news releases, the web and advertisements promoting its scholarships; 2) agree to write funders a thank you note; and 3) may be required to attend a scholarship stewardship event, if held.
