Scholarships and Fellowships totaling $137,000 were awarded to 23 students during the 2022 – 2023 academic year through the following

- UWT Graduate Merit Scholarship
- Bishop Curtis Montgomery and Dr. Elinor Montgomery Scholarship
- Simon Family Endowment Autism MSW Fellowship
- Behavioral Health Workforce Development Initiative (BHWDI) Scholarship
- School of Social Work and Criminal Justice Student Scholarship
- Moceri Endowed MSW Student Fellowship
- Marc Walters Behavioral Health Scholarship
In addition, the Child Welfare Training and Advancement Program (CWTAP) provided $705,000 in tuition and fee assistance to an average of 37 students during 2022 – 2023.
These funds help reduce barriers and financial struggles for our students in achieving their educational goals. Congratulations to all of our scholarship and fellowship recipients!
The School of Social Work and Criminal Justice has multiple opportunities to support students in our degree programs by contributing to scholarships. These scholarships expand educational access for students with financial need and celebrate our students’ academic successes. Through field practicums and internships, and in their careers as alumni, our students work in and around the South Puget Sound region, providing vital social services and deepening our community’s commitment to justice, wellbeing, and the dismantling of systemic inequities. The Simon Family Endowment recognizes and supports graduate social work students as future professional providers of lifelong care for adult individuals diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or an Intellectual Disability.
Because there is a dire need in the South Sound for such providers, the objective of the University of Washington Tacoma Simon Family Endowment is to offer funded Master of Social Work Fellowships and fieldwork practicum opportunities in agencies serving autistic or intellectually disabled adults.
In memory of Bishop Curtis Montgomery and his wife Dr. Elinor Montgomery, the School of Social Work and Criminal Justice is pleased to announce the Montgomery Scholarship. With the continued support of the Montgomery Family book-aid scholarships are available. These one-time awards are available to UW Tacoma students enrolled in social work degree programs with awards intended for BASW students and MSW students. The Montgomery’s wish was to encourage student leadership and excellence and to aid students struggling with the financial undertaking of higher education.
As a result of generous donations from Associate Professor Emerita. Janice Laakso and her husband, John Laakso, the School of Social Work and Criminal Justice will offer financial support for participation in policy-focused activities to students enrolled in BASW and MSW programs. Jacque DaCamara was a cousin and close friend of the donors and shared with them a passion for politics, the political process, and making a difference through advocacy.
Established by Steve (UWT MSW alum) and Joane Moceri (former UWT Nursing faculty), the distributions for this fund are split between Social Work and Nursing. For our program’s portion, the purpose is to directly support graduate students in the MSW degree program. Student selection is based on academic merit or financial need (financial need not required). Students of color and first generation students are strongly encouraged to apply. Any MSW student who is a prior recipient of this fellowship can reapply for the fellowship in a subsequent academic year.
This will fund field work expenses for students, continuing education for UWT faculty and staff as well as site supervisors in the community, and recognition/awards for site supervisors and community agencies.
The School of Social Work and Criminal Justice Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to undergraduate and graduate students in our degree programs based on need and merit.
The School’s Excellence Fund supports innovative initiatives and ongoing operations within the school. Donated funds are distributed at the discretion of the Dean.
Support for student field work, continuing education for field education faculty and staff as well as site supervisors in the community, and/or funding for recognition opportunities for site supervisors and affiliated community agencies.
